Summary Launaea cervicornis (Boiss.) Font Quer & Rothm. (Compositae: Lactuceae: Hyoseridinae) is illustrated and described. The species endemic to the Balearics, dominant in limestone cliff‐top plant association Launaeion (O. Bolòs Vigo ex Y. Gil Llorens) Rivas‐Martínez, Fernández‐González Loidi) on islands. Notes cultivation, propagation, pests diseases availability are provided. position of Cass. tribe Lactuceae (= Cichorieae) subtribe Hyoseridinae Less. discussed, as within genus, sole taxon sect. Cervicornes N. Kilian. reproductive biology discussed. exhibits a particularly short flowering time (per floret) period, maximizing calm periods an abundance flower visitors/pollinators. possesses three different dispersal mechanisms – anemochory (for solitary achenes), atelechory barochory for mature, unopened involucres. former ensuring there some movement away from parent plant, latter two effectively that propagules not instantly blown off cliffs into sea.
